On Thursday, February 15th, The Chipotle Mexican Grill on 86th Street here in Indianapolis participated in the Pennies For Patients Campaign. (More about the Campaign is below.) Our Club Members, if they ate there, just had to mention that they were “Here For LLS” and Chipotle would donate 50% of its proceeds to the campaign. This actually went well beyond just our club.but our club members were happy to participate and give back!!!Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period, benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Everyone who participates is a winner!
Students across the country are collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters during the Pennies for Patients campaigns benefiting the Society.
In the Pennies for Patients campaign, the class collecting the most change in each school receives a pizza party. Prizes such as computers, electronics and sports equipment are presented to the top schools in each area. The Pennies for Patients campaign began in the Society’s North Carolina Chapter in 1995.

“Great Leaders Don’t Set Out To Be A Leader…They Set Out To Make A Difference. It’s Never About The Role – Always About The Goal.”
I came across the above quote the other day and I quickly jotted it down on a piece of paper so that I could use it for this very blog post.
For me…it describes Joan Wilson PERFECTLY!
I was fortunate enough to work with Joan for a few years at Kiwanis International, and then again this past year as part of the new Kiwanis Club that she started here in Indianapolis. I learned so much from her…but the one thing that I think stands out most for me….the one thing that I continue to see her work so hard for and try to achieve every day of her life…and it is the reason why I am still involved in Kiwanis today….is because our “END GOAL” is helping and serving the children of the world.
As Joan moves onto a new chapter in her life….”retirement”…I know that her legacy at Kiwanis International will live on….
And I know that myself, along with all of our fellow club members….will strive to make her proud….to keep working hard to build up our strength in numbers….to find additional community service projects….and to help and serve the children of Indianapolis…Indiana….the United States….and THE WORLD!
THANK YOU JOAN! You have been a wonderful Leader, President and Friend to us all! We will miss you while you are down in Florida soaking up the sun.
And while you are sipping on your fancy “Beach Drinks” – just remember….here in Indy….
It will always be….Five O’Clock Somewhere
Scott (And The Rest Of The Club)
This was sent to me today in an email…..
And this is truly something that EVERYONE…not just Kiwanians….should listen and take heed to!
William H. McRaven: How I Went Through Hell Week
United States Navy admiral William H. McRaven delivers a powerful speech about the importance of doing the little things and embracing fear in life.
Make Sure you Turn On The Volume When You Get The Video Started.
It is a remarkable…powerful…inspiring speech!!
So often, I hear people say that they want to get involved and that they want to make a difference in people’s lives but they just don’t know how!
If it sounds simple…it is simple!
Join a Kiwanis Club! If not ours…one in your community! If there is not one in your community…why not check into starting one? There are so many great opportunities out there people!
BE THE DIFFERENCE!!!!
Someone there would LOVE to assist you in getting you in touch with a club in your community or helping you get one started!
THANK YOU FOR CARING!

Once again…our club was able to help support local Children’s hospitals by partnering with a local IHOP here in Indianapolis by volunteering to work on National Pancake Day!
We had quite a few club members volunteer to work at the store during different shifts and talk to the customers explaining to them the importance of their donations and where they would be going! Donations stay local to fund critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment and charitable care. Its various fundraising partners and programs support the nonprofit’s mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.
We Are So Proud Of Our Club…Our Members….And KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL!!!
THIS….IS WHAT WE DO! And THIS….IS WHY WE DO IT!!!!
Our Kiwanis Club was lucky enough to work with “Willow Lake Place” Assisted Living Facility this Valentine’s Day to help bring their residents some love, joy and excitement!
The week before Valentine’s Day, we got together during our regular club meeting and put together some special Valentine’s Day cards for each of the residents.
We also made some really cool “Candy Heart Cards” for each of the residents as well as provide them some other delicious treats.
While we were talking with the Activities Director at Willow Lake, we found out that they could also benefit from receiving books for the residents to read. Since we sponsor a Little Free Library called Naptown Books (which is located at Kiwanis International) – we were able to gather together a tub full of books that the residents can enjoy as well.
We love being able to give back to our community and Willow Lake Place is a great facility that we are happy to be partnering with!!!
Here is some additional info on Willow Lake Place :
From the moment you arrive, it’s evident Willow Lake Place is a step above the rest. With our meticulously maintained gardens and our inviting common spaces and apartments, we have something for everyone. We offer the residents of this pet friendly community the opportunity to thrive in mind and body by developing individual care plans to meet the needs of each resident. With a full-time licensed nurse available 24 hours a day to provide clinical oversight and coordination of care, we strive to maintain each resident’s independence. If the outdoors is what you enjoy, socializing with friends on the wrap-around porch and terrace, joining one our many Walking Clubs or gardening in the courtyard would be right up your alley. When the weather is less than ideal, there is never a lack of indoor activities to keep you engaged like Candy Bar Bingo, Crazy for Crosswords, Pinterest and Church Services. Plus, we are conveniently located near I-465, so all the conveniences of Northwest Indianapolis are not far from home.
“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Martin Luther King Jr.
