Our Kiwanis One Day Project

It all started about 2 years ago as the Brainchild of Scott & René Booker and Casey Keller.  It was their love of books and their sense of community service that led to the development of the Little Free Library known as “Naptown Books” here in Indianapolis.  After raising the funds to obtain the library, and getting it fully decorated and ready to go, they enlisted the service of their Kiwanis Club, The Kiwanis Club of Indy – It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere, to help them get the library launched and open for business.

On Kiwanis One Day, members of our Kiwanis Club joined together to install the Little Free Library located at the Kiwanis International Headquarters.  After getting the Library mounted in place, the group filled the Library with books for all ages, designed free bookmarks, discussed future plans for literacy outreach programs, and came together for a fun filled day of community service.

We were even fortunate to have the Kiwanis International Foundation Board, Executive Director Stan Soderstrom and two past Kiwanis International Presidents show up to show their support.

It was an awesome Kiwanis One Day event that is literally…one for the Books!!!

We would love it if you could help us win $200.00 to the Kiwanis International Store by VOTING for us starting on November 28th by clicking on this link:  VOTE FOR US!!!!

And help us spread the word about this wonderful project by letting people know about the Little Free Library!  For more information on it – check it out:  Naptown Books

Kiwanis One Day – Part 1

Each year, Kiwanis clubs around the world join in a day of service. Starting in the 2016–17 administrative year, Kiwanis One Day will be held on the fourth Saturday of October. In 2016, Kiwanis One Day will be observed on October 22.

The Kiwanis International board decided to move the annual Kiwanis One Day observance to October to align with future sponsorship opportunities.

Clubs that held a Kiwanis One Day event in April 2016 are not required to hold a second event this year. Clubs seeking ideas for the October observance could consider participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF as a Kiwanis-Key Club event. Clubs that wish to participate in the Legacy of Play contest, held with partner Landscape Structures Inc. can start planning their submission to win  US$25,000 worth of playground equipment available in that contest.

Kiwanis One Day is a great opportunity to bring together the Kiwanis family of clubs to focus on local community service. It’s an example of our belief that kids need Kiwanis–kids in the community need Kiwanis to provide programs and services no longer available because of school and municipal budget constraints, and kids who want to be in youth clubs need Kiwanis club members as mentors to help them thrive, prosper and grow.

Our First Major Service Project – Diaper Dump

Our first major service project our club was a “Diaper Dump”.  We aksed individuals to donate diapers to our club so that we could donate and delieve them to two very worthwhile places. The first place was the BABE store, an incentive program run by the Marion County Public Health Department.

Beds and Britches, Etc. (B.A.B.E.)  of Indianapolis is an incentive program run by the Marion County Public Health Department that provides new and used clothing and supplies to pregnant women and children up to age 5. The program distributes coupons to participants, which can be redeemed at a B.A.B.E. store for new and gently used baby essentials.

Please view the B.A.B.E. Store brochure for more information.

We asked them since we would be dropping off diapers was there anything that they needed help on. We wanted to volunteer our time as well as donating to them. They took us up on the offer and several of us one evening meet at the BABE warehouse and packaged diapers, clothing, and blankets for the BABE store. We had a lot of fun doing it and get to learn more about each other during this time.  We made it a quick meeting, social time and service all in one night!

The second place we found to donate diapers to was the Julian Center.

Giving Back – Our First 2 Service Projects

Serving 1

Our brand new club is off to a great start with 2 service projects under our belt.

  • We collected hats, scarves, and gloves for the Indianapolis Downtown Kiwanis Clubs Aktion Club! Very simple project and now the Aktion Club members will be warm this winter with their outdoor activities.
  • A member of our club, Monic Hill, asked if we would like to sponsor a family through the YMCA Giving Tree for the holidays. We received two families and everyone jumped right in and picked up gifts for all the children in both families.

From Monic: “Thank you so, so much for your kindness! I’m so humbly grateful to you all. With your help, we are able to provide 18 families and each 54 child/youth (ranging from ages 6 months to 18 yrs) with three to five Christmas gifts each this year.”

Especially this time of year…it is important to remember that giving back to others is one of the greatest gifts that all of us can do!

Diaper Dump – Our First Service Project

At our second club meeting tonight…it was agreed upon that our FIRST service project will be a…….

Diaper Dump 1

We are so very excited about this project and know that it will be a huge success.

Stay tuned for more details!!!
